Tool Try Out: Domo Animate
In my search for a good tool to try, I stumbled upon a Japanese mascot named Domo. I had seen the character on a few drawings from my students. They would display them on their folders and at times add sketches to their clothing. After a bit of research, I found that I could create my own Domo animation using the domo.goanimate.com website.
Animation is a great way to engage students in a topic. I chose to add animation as a method of reviewing systems of equations. This animation is avaialble for students to preview either at school or at home when needed. Not only will they be able to review some math, they are also encouraged to create their own animations for projects and to fuel their creative spirits.
The animation process was quite easy. Once a person creates a user name and password, they are able to create animation and slide shows. A great way to begin is to have a story line and add scenes to help support the story. Characters, music, effects, and text can be added to each scene. Depending on the complexity of the story line, the animated movie can take minutes or hours to perfect. This was unfortunately my down fall. I kept trying to perfect my animated series and had to come to a point where I needed to stop. Regardless of how many times I thought I was finished…I always found more to add or tweak. So here is my tool try out with Domo Animate. I found that it was a great tool to revisit content in a more dynamic way. Enjoy!

Domo Kun: Background Information
Domo is a popular mascot character used for Japan’s television broadcasting station NHK. One of the directors of Domo is Tsuneo Goda who uses stop motion animation to create emotion in the characters. The main charater is Domo. He is an interseting character that was hatched from an egg. Although he can communicate with the other characters, the audience hears him with a low-pitched noise. Domo eats meat and potato stew, he dislikes apples, and passes gas when he is upset. Most of his day is spent watching television and being disruptive.
Other main characters in the series are Mr. Usagi (old rabbit), Patience and Mario (two bats), and Tashanna (female weasel). Mr. Usagi is low mantience and lives in a cave with Domo. He likes to watch television and drinks green tea. The two bats, Patience and Mario are mother and son. Patience is very gentle and loves watching the sunset. Mario is a sportsman. He has created a new sport that is a combination of soccer and baseball. Mario often keeps Domo out of trouble. Tashanna is a 17-year old girl who dreams of being a fashion stylist or model in Tokyo and loves to use technology.
